Sheila Mackay Stir Crazy

Going a bit stir crazy now with the snow making travel very tricky. Managed to get the car out a couple of days ago to top up on food supplies so well fed and warm. The cats are behaving like bored children and treating everything inside as trees and chasing objects. Although the snow is pretty and lends some interesting light to photographs, it would be good to see the sun melt it all away now. Still shocked at the local council for not having enough grit and salt to clear paths and roads. Ther… Continue

Kathleen Bates Lochinver and Ullapool

We are just back from a weeks camping in the north of Scotland. What kind of folk go camping in this weather, I hear you say, we do. We went up north for two concerts by Eric Bogle, so we had to stay, this is his final tour here. Well the weather never let us down, it rained and rained, as a spectactular finish it blew a force ten gale. We did have a great time though. The really good thing was we survived and so did the tent.

seonag about

I am not a photographer and I don't have a fancy camera and I don't have or would even have a clue about how to use photoshop! I like some of my photos because of what there are about and where they are taken. Almost just like a memory as mine isn't good. So, sorry, nothing fancy here! Continue

Andy Guthrie The Goddess Ness

THE GODDESS NESS Now Ness was a daughter of Beira, she was beautiful its Sid that all the animals haled her coming very mooring, her hair was and brown as chestnuts, and eyes like green Safire’s, and skin, the white of the snow goose, she dressy in blue of the sky, and the green of the earth and as many fine jewels, about her. Now if was Ness’s duty to take the cover from the well on the mountain top every mooring as before the sun came up, and all the deer, goats, bares, high-horned cattle an… Continue

Erik Zoha Slioch From Loch Maree: Winter by Erik Zoha

Concentric flying saucers hovering. Lenticular clouds, cotton-white, reflected In daybreak light, they fade to grey. Indigo and sapphire-blue sky overtopping castellated summit of Slioch. Hard-packed snow deep-filling corries and crevices; Torridonian sandstone crags contrasting with Lewisian gneiss bedrock. Too early to decipher mixed deciduous woodland and isolated rowans clinging to soil above silver-to-sapphire Loch Maree. Continue

Rita Lopes Everyone's Free (To Wear Sunscreen)

Ladies and Gentlemen of the class of '99. Wear sunscreen. If I could offer you one tip for the future, sunscreen would be it. The long-term benefits of sunscreen have been proved by scientists whereas the rest of my advice has no basis more reliable than my own meandering experience... I will dispense this advice now Enjoy the power and beauty of your youth; oh, nevermind, you will not understand the power and beauty of your youth until they've faded. But trust me, in 20 years you'll look back… Continue

Erik Zoha Campaign Against Waste Incineration in Perthshire

The people of Perth and Kinross are now fighting Scotland's insane march towards waste incineration on two fronts - Binn Farm near Abernethy, and Shore Road in Perth. The Council, in its wisdom, has decided that it needs to burn rubbish - despite the fact that doing so produces up to two tonnes of CO2 for every tonne of waste, and emits a lethal cocktail of chemicals, heavy metals and fine particulates into the atmosphere. The Tayside Environmental Action Group - TEAG - has proved beyond all dou… Continue

Erik Zoha Highlands - A Cautionary Poem by Erik Zoha

Pointless journeys back and forth - Footprints, Land Rover/bicycle tyre tracks, criss-crossing, despoiling, disfiguring what should be pristine wilderness. Carbon dioxide emissions, acid rain, ravaging trees and fragile vegetation. No accountability for preserving environment. Muddy morass of Munro-baggers, campers, mountain bikers wrecking the solitude that attracts people to the landscape in the first place. Humankind the enemy. Destroying legacy to the next generation. Kenny MacKenzie Scotland's Oldest Wee Boy

I thought this would sit nicely with 'Oor Wullie: Ae Fond Tribute by Erik Zoha'... I wrote the song many years ago in response to the Sunday Post asking for submissions to write a song for Oor Wullie. Erik Zoha The View by Erik Zoha

Silvery, sinewy concrete span Bridging the silvery Tay – Bisecting the photo of Dundee. Lush, green Fife contrasts with grey- Toned City of Discovery. Unloved, unlovely Tayside House Dominates centre-right, scraping sky With D.C. Thompson nearby, Separated by Caird Hall; memories of Graduation, class of ’89. Academic and office tower blocks Jostle for space with church spires That McGonagall would have described In compellingly obvious rhyme. And, in the foreground, ex-DRI, red-hued And white-to… Continue

Erik Zoha Dunnottar Castle by Erik Zoha

Perched precariously on 100-foot cliffs between North Sea and Highland Boundary Fault, Guarded by a hard mile-long slog down stone steps, Brooding Dunnottar unravels its contents slowly, Tardis-like. Guardhouse, living quarters, barracks, well-preserved Chapel and tower-house, munitions room, Half-intact, half-ruined; when complete, A natural safe-house for Scotland’s Crown Jewels When Cromwell’s forces put down rebellions, post-Civil War. Now thousands more Americans, Japanese and European tour… Continue

Erik Zoha Rannoch Moor by Erik Zoha

I guess this is the best place to share creative writing on a landscape/places theme so here goes... Sun setting on Rannoch Moor- Gnarled, ancient, wizened tree, Ominous storm-filled sky, Mile on mile of blanket moor From Schiehallion to Buachaille. Rowan, ash and oak remnants Like decimated armies; Isolated, ruined crofts, Reminders of clearances. Birds of prey on guard as sentries. Continue

Erik Zoha Appreciating Oor Wullie by Erik Zoha

I have been a fan of Oor Wullie since the age of 10. Visiting family friends in Edinburgh, I passed the time engrossed in an old annual, 1950s vintage, of the braw laddie’s exploits, along with his pals Fat Bob and Wee Eck. Due to an inky smudge, I initially believed his other partner in mischief was called Soapy Squatar, but soon realised he was, in fact, Soapy Soutar. His nemesis, PC Murdoch, was usually outwitted by Wullie and the lads, but showed grudging respect to the wee scamps. Wullie’s… Continue

Kenny MacKenzie Song For Sanna

I wrote this song about 15 years ago about the village of Sanna in Ardnamurchan. My family have roots there going back over 100 years. We have a home in the village which we visit as often as possible. The house was build by my grandfather in the 60's when the original black house went in to disrepair. The beach is one of the most beautiful in the world... (apart from the 'west side' of the Isle of Berneray North Uist. I recorded an album of mostly my own material about 4 years ago and will be… Continue

erskine Lunderston Bay

I went for a walk along the Clyde Coast from Cardwell Bay to Inverkip today. A fine, frosty morning, it was good to be out. Surprisingly, this was the first time that I had walked this stretch despite living fairly close by and regularly visiting the garden centre at Cardwell Bay. Even at this time of year, the birds around the bay are quite prolific. Eiders, mallards, heron, curlew, dunlin, oystercatchers, gulls, finches, robins, crows, etc were all seen. Along with some reddish ducks that I h… Continue
