Maureen Kelly

National Anthem

Folks, 'Flower of Scotland' is our national anthem: the melody is as profound as our people...

I have been compelled to reach you directly following Finlay Calder wishing to 'scrap' 'Flower of Scotland'!!!! yes I agree we need to represent our present times however I believe we can do this with passion and regard towards The Corries original piece?

I have written and attached my revised lyric to our powerful and emotive national treasure...

Just imagine every earthly Celt heart, at the bells linked in kinship singing not only in tune but in unison... not once - not twice - BUT ALL NIGHT LONG!

cheers. Like you I agree the original words will always be in tablets of stone. I discovered having lived and visited many countries Vee, we are a passionate and unique bunch. I only aspire to re-energise and build momentum in a song that connects us. I thought (respectfully) that using The Corries melody makes it easier to pick up... all the best to you too Maureen :)

Following our countries global message of peace and reconciliation - utilised through our judicial system, with its triumphant power to withhold humanity over adversity... again I stress the need for one Scottish anthem to be sung in unison: to convey a message of Hope, Passion and Love to our troubled foes - and a message of support to our courageous friends x

Hi Maureen,

My name is Ben Kelly, good name Kelly, anyway, i wrote the lyrics to Highland Cathedral which has been touted as a possible candidtae to a Scottish Anthem. Not the reason I wrote it, though it's a cracking inspiring tune. But I do feel we need something a bit more majestic and tuneful than 'Flower of Scotland'. In order to not continually feel subserviant to an English crown, we have to rise above it and show that it no longer bothers us and write songs that reflect our own purpose and glory. When we sing 'Flower of Scotland', many of the 'Auld Enemy' get a buzz out of the fact that we still relate back to historical propaganda. The song's good for rugby but little else as it's never sung the way the Corries sang it.

Highland Cathedral is one of my most favourite of all!!!!! And THAT would certainly make a great anthem with the stirring words and music.
Yup a good name Kelly, that's my daughter's christian name.

I don't actually like flower of Scotland and definatly not for an anthem to represent Scotland. The football croud display everything that is wrong with this song for a national anthem. You are right about harping back to past glories? and battles with the English. The Corries made another song about Scotland and is much better. The song talks about the Scottish people and how we are hospitable to friends, not how we want to stick it to our neibhours across the border, as I don't know the wording of Scottish Cathedral I can add no comment. I am going to find out the words though, and soon.

I've put the song 'Scotland will flourish' by the Corries on my site, I think the sentiment is more in keeping for a Scottish National anthem, though I do admit the words need a little polishing. I think anyone who knows the song will agree with both facts, it is a more apt song and the words need a wee bit polish. If I was casting a vote, it would get mine, but then what do I know.

As a born Welsh woman I feel there is only one criteria for a good National anthem, to sound rousing at the rugby, check Welsh anthem out, Flower of Scotland is a great tune but not a great anthem and you are right, a bit backwards looking all for a bit of former glories but...... An anthem needs to inspire and quicken the heart slightly when it is sung!

And the Welsh anthem certainly is a great rousing and inspirational tune!!
